The composition of the oil-phase varies significantly from location to location, although the contaminants are predominantly benzene and distillates or a mixture of both. The aromatic contents (BTEX) of the oil-phase ranges from between 6W% and 78W%. At the beginning of remediation, oil-phase layers were recorded up to 3m thick. Extracted groundwater is discharged into the refinery’s own wastewater system. The refinery operation requires particularly high standards of safety equipment and work protection. All equipment satisfies the requirements for explosion protection principles (ATEX) and Class AI (TRbF) flammable liquids.
